Causes of Flash Flooding

  • Heavy rainfall overwhelming major drainage channels, especially in low-lying and waterfront areas.
  • Rising lagoon water levels during intense rainfalls, leading to tidal locks that prevent effective discharge of stormwater
  • Indiscriminate waste disposal, which obstructs water flow and worsens flooding.

Safety Advisories

  • Residents in low-lying areas are advised to relocate to higher grounds to safeguard lives and properties.
  • Parents are cautioned to keep children indoors and away from flooded areas to prevent accidents.
  • Motorists and pedestrians are warned against attempting to cross flooded roads, as vehicles may become submerged and individuals swept away by strong currents.

Government Efforts

  • The state government has intensified year-round cleaning and maintenance of drainage channels.
  • Contracts have been awarded for concrete lining of new drains to better contain runoff from heavy rains.
  • Emergency response teams, including the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang, have been deployed to major flood-prone areas to clear blockages and ensure smooth water flow.
