INEC new election dates – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced new dates for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, introducing a revised timetable that affects presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly polls.
The Commission made this announcement on Thursday, February 26, 2026, after reviewing the country’s updated electoral laws and aligning its schedule accordingly.
📅 New Election Dates Announced
According to INEC, Nigerians will now vote on the following dates:
- Presidential & National Assembly Elections: Saturday, January 16, 2027
- Governorship & State Houses of Assembly Elections: Saturday, February 6, 2027
Previously, the presidential election had been scheduled for February 20, 2027, while governorship polls were expected to hold on March 6, 2027. However, the Commission adjusted the timetable to comply with new legal requirements.

⚖️ Why INEC Changed The Dates
INEC explained that it revised the schedule following the introduction of a new Electoral Act, which replaced the previous legal framework guiding elections in Nigeria.
As a result, the Commission had to realign all electoral activities to fit within the updated timelines required by law.
Furthermore, INEC stated that the adjustment will ensure full compliance, improve planning, and give political parties and stakeholders adequate time to prepare.
🗳️ Key Preparatory Activities And Deadlines
In addition to the new election dates, INEC released a detailed timetable for political parties and candidates.
Party Primaries
Political parties will conduct their primaries between:
April 23 and May 30, 2026
Campaign Periods
- Presidential & National Assembly campaigns begin: August 19, 2026
- Governorship & State Assembly campaigns begin: September 9, 2026
However, all campaigns must end 24 hours before election day, in line with electoral regulations.
🔄 Changes To Off-Cycle Elections
Meanwhile, INEC also made adjustments to off-cycle elections.
Notably, the Osun State governorship election will now hold on August 15, 2026, instead of the earlier announced August 8, 2026.
🇳🇬 What This Means For Nigerians
This new timetable is significant for several reasons.
First, it gives political parties clear timelines to organize primaries, campaigns, and logistics. Second, it ensures the electoral process follows the new legal framework. Finally, it allows voters, observers, and stakeholders to prepare early for a smooth election cycle.
As Nigeria prepares for another democratic transition, INEC says it remains committed to free, fair, and credible elections across the country.
🧠 Final Word
With this revised timetable now in place, attention will quickly shift to party primaries, candidate selection, and campaign strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Therefore, Nigerians should expect heightened political activities in the coming months as the race for leadership intensifies.
