Nasir El-Rufai, Abuja – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has extended the detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The commission made this decision as it continues to investigate alleged financial irregularities totaling ₦432 billion. Meanwhile, his lawyer has requested bail, emphasizing his cooperation and low flight risk.

El-Rufai initially honored the EFCC’s invitation for questioning regarding the alleged mismanagement of state funds from 2015 to 2023. However, the commission decided to hold him beyond the standard 48-hour detention period allowed under Nigerian law. Consequently, his legal team moved swiftly to seek bail.

Details of the Allegations

The allegations focus on unauthorized loans, inflated contracts, and discrepancies in state revenue and expenditure. Initially highlighted by an ad hoc committee of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, the EFCC now investigates each claim in detail. In particular:

  • Unauthorized Loans and Guarantees: The EFCC is reviewing loans reportedly obtained without proper legislative approval.
  • Contract Inflation & Mismanagement: Some contracts appear overpriced, prompting questions about procurement procedures.
  • Misappropriation of Public Funds: The commission notes discrepancies in financial records that reportedly total ₦432 billion.

EFCC Detention and Bail Process

Under the EFCC Act, the commission can detain suspects for up to 48 hours for questioning. If investigations require more time, the EFCC applies to a court for extended remand. Meanwhile, suspects may request bail at any point. Courts evaluate requests based on flight risk, cooperation, and public interest. In El-Rufai’s case, his lawyers filed for bail while the EFCC continues its investigation. Therefore, his detention remains under scrutiny.

Current Status

So far, the investigation remains at the pre-charge stage. No formal court conviction exists against El-Rufai. The EFCC continues to review evidence thoroughly. As a result, the public and political watchers remain highly interested in the outcome.

Next Steps

If the EFCC finds sufficient evidence, it may file formal charges against the former governor. Until then, he remains in detention while his lawyers push for bail. Consequently, the nation closely follows developments in this high-profile probe, which has already stirred significant attention.
