DARE devil gunmen have ambushed a fully loaded Benue Links Bus in Ikobi, Otukpo Local Government area of Benue State on Thursday night, killing the driver and abducting all passengers on board.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants ambushed the vehicle on the highway, fatally shooting the driver before leading the passengers into the nearby bush.
However, a toddler was reportedly left behind by the kidnappers.
A local resident, who asked not to be named, stated, “We heard gunshots and rushed out, only to find the bus abandoned with the driver dead. The passengers had been taken away.”
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but security agencies have been alerted and are reportedly tracking the whereabouts of the victims.
Reacting to the attack, the President of the Ochetoha K’Idoma youth wing, Mike Magaji, condemned the government’s perceived inaction regarding insecurity in the state.
“It is heartbreaking that our people continue to live in fear while the government remains silent,” Magaji said.
“How many more lives must be lost before decisive action is taken?”
He also criticised Governor Hyacinth Alia’s visit to Otukpo, stating, “The governor’s visit was a disappointment. Our people expected leadership, not vague reassurances. We need a clear plan to end these attacks.”
Magaji urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted passengers and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The government must rise up to its responsibilities. We cannot continue to mourn our people daily while those in power look the other way,” he added.
When contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, said she was yet to confirm the details of the incident at the time of reporting.
Community members have expressed growing concerns over the rising spate of violent attacks in the area.
Residents are calling for increased security presence along major highways in the state.
As investigations continue, security forces have assured the public that efforts are underway to locate and rescue the kidnapped victims.
Authorities are urging anyone with useful information to come forward.
The attack adds to the growing list of security challenges in Benue State, where incidents of kidnapping and armed violence have become increasingly common in recent months.
