A planned wedding in Ibadan was cancelled after a dispute between a bride and her mother-in-law over how the bride addressed her fiancé’s young relatives.

The bride, a 29-year-old master’s degree holder, explained that the disagreement began when she called her fiancé’s 11-year-old niece by her first name while asking for help with her dress. According to her, her mother-in-law considered the action disrespectful, insisting that the child should be addressed as “Aunty Temilade.”

“I was shocked when she said I must call an 11-year-old ‘aunty.’ I tried to explain respectfully that I couldn’t do that, but she insisted it was a matter of family respect,” the bride narrated.

The situation escalated when the mother-in-law further objected to the bride’s use of Yoruba greetings with another teenage niece, arguing that the form of address showed disrespect. The bride said her fiancé sided with his mother, asking her to comply with the demand.

“I told him I could not humiliate myself like that. I respect people, but I cannot call children I’m 15 to 18 years older than ‘aunty’ or ‘uncle,’” she added.

The mother-in-law reportedly called the head of the family and announced that the marriage was cancelled. The groom subsequently blocked the bride on social media.

The woman, who said she has since returned to her apartment, maintained that she has always treated her fiancé’s family with respect but would not compromise on what she described as “an unnecessary demand.”

“This is 2025. I cannot be subjected to such. It is not pride, it is about self-respect,” she said, vowing to move on with her life.
