Two police inspectors have been confirmed dead following a deadly attack on a Distress Response Squad (DRS) patrol team by gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Enugu State.

The incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, December 27, 2025, along Zik Avenue, near the Good Shepherd Specialist Hospital in Enugu metropolis. Security sources disclosed that the attackers, numbering about six, arrived at the scene in an ash-coloured Lexus RX 350 SUV and launched a sudden and coordinated assault on the police patrol team.

According to reports credited to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the assailants opened heavy gunfire on the officers, overwhelming them before setting their patrol Hilux vehicle ablaze. The surprise nature of the attack left little room for resistance or reinforcement.

Two police inspectors, identified as Valentine Iheme and Ani Anayo, both attached to the DRS unit, were fatally wounded during the exchange. Their deaths have further heightened concerns over the growing wave of targeted attacks against security personnel in the South-East region.

In addition to the loss of lives, the gunmen reportedly made away with three AK-47 rifles, each fully loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition, further compounding security fears in the state. The seizure of the rifles by non-state actors raises fresh alarms about the circulation of illicit weapons and the potential for more violent attacks.

Following the incident, the Enugu State Police Command swiftly launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. All tactical units and available operational assets have been deployed to track down the suspects, recover the stolen weapons, and prevent further attacks.

Police authorities have assured residents of Enugu State that the situation is under control and that those responsible for the attack will be identified and brought to justice. The command also urged members of the public to remain calm, vigilant, and to provide useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
