Born on December 18, 1926, Duro Ladipo was a Nigerian dramatist who revolutionized Yoruba theatre. Believed to be an “Abiku” – a child born after several siblings passed away in infancy – Ladipo’s life was marked by a blend of traditional and Christian influences.

Early Life and Inspiration

Ladipo’s parents, Joseph and Dorcas, were devout Anglican Christians, but his grandfather’s devotion to Sango and Oya sparked his interest in Yoruba culture. He observed Ifa and Egungun festivals, which later inspired his theatrical work.

Theatrical Career

Ladipo’s plays combined dance, music, and folklore, showcasing Yoruba traditions. He founded the Mbari Mbayo Club in Osogbo, a cultural centre that nurtured young artists. Notable plays include “Ọbamoro,” “Ọba ko so,” and “Ọba Waja.” He also promoted “Moremi,” a play about the Yoruba ancestress.

Personal Life

Ladipo was known for his love of traditional foods like eba with boiled eggs and okro soup. He managed a peaceful household with four wives and 15 children. Despite his busy career, he prioritized his family’s well-being.

A Fitting Farewell

After a short illness, Ladipo passed away on March 11, 1978, at 51. His death was marked by a sudden thunder storm, which some interpreted as a sign of Sango’s welcome.
