Veteran Journalist and ace broadcaster, Ambassador (Dr) Yemi Farounbi on Thursday said Nigerians are not honest with themselves, we do not love Nigeria and that we are not committed to Nigeria.

Farounbi who was farmer Ambassador to Philippines made the remarks at the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at their popular monthly Program, GUEST OF THE MONTH that has the Ambassador as its first guest in its revived edition.
In the new edition, Farounbi was asked about Nigeria having a new constitution for a true Federalism.
“We need a Nigeria that gives us hope, a Nigeria that makes us to actualize our dreams, a Nigeria that takes care of all of us. A Nigeria that takes care of security of our lives and properties where the young can aspire to the top, that is the one!”

“So how do we get to the top? Is it writing a new constitution or going back to 1963 Constitution?
Of course we cant bring back the 1963 constitution because of the other things that have happened. We have 36 states now unlike the three regions we have in 1963, we have to be smart and agree.
What is going to our Federating Units? Is it zones or is it the states? You can have the 36 states as federating units and vest in them the powers that the regions used to have.

Another thing is, if we have National Assembly that have its responsibilities to the people. All these debates that we cannot write a new constitution is all a lie.
When Obasanjo became the President, the first thing he did was to ask the three political parties, the NPN, AD and APP to set up a Committee to look at the 1999 Constitution and to bring a new Constitution which they did. And they set up Nigerian Reform Committee under Professor Jerry Gana. And they all went round the country getting people’s views and they got a Draft Constitution.
There was a CONFAB, this Draft Constitution was given to the CONFAB, what killed it? One clause; that some people agreed Prof Gana smuggled into it, the call for a Third Term.
And rather than go to the National Assembly to remove that clause, they rejected the whole constitution.

So when the Deputy Senate President said they cannot write a new constitution, the first National Assembly what were they doing? They wrote a new constitution.
The truth is that we are not honest, the truth is that we dont love Nigeria, the truth is that we are not committed to Nigeria. If we are all committed to a better Nigeria, there is nothing we cannot do. We can put amendment clause to the 1999 Constitution and says “all the powers of the 36 states shall be what it was in 1963 Constitution.”
Amb Farounbi added that if the youths are ready to get the power at the top they have the majority that can enable them with 60% population. He said the power will never be given to them rather they should come together as one and be focused to work for it and get it.
