A massive fire outbreak has gutted large sections of the popular Oshodi Arena Market in Lagos, leaving traders devastated and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.

The inferno reportedly started in the early hours of the day and spread rapidly through several rows of shops, fueled by highly flammable materials common in the market. Eyewitnesses said thick smoke billowed into the sky as traders and residents scrambled to salvage whatever goods they could before the flames took over.

Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were later deployed to the scene and battled for hours to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings and residential areas. As of the time of filing this report, the fire had been brought under control, though cooling operations were still ongoing.

While no loss of life has been officially confirmed, several traders sustained minor injuries during the chaos. Many shop owners were seen in tears as they assessed the extent of the damage, describing the incident as a huge setback amid Nigeria’s harsh economic conditions.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault, a recurring issue in many markets across Lagos. However, authorities say a full investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause.

The Oshodi Arena Market is one of the busiest commercial hubs in Lagos, known for clothing, shoes, and household items. Repeated fire outbreaks in major markets have continued to raise concerns about poor electrical wiring, lack of fire safety equipment, and inadequate emergency access routes.

Traders are now calling on the Lagos State Government to provide urgent relief materials and financial support to affected victims, while also strengthening fire prevention measures to avoid future occurrences.

This is a developing story. More details will be provided as they emerge.
