Jalumi War Monument at Inisa, State of Osun

The State of Osun on Friday, November 8, 2019 Commissioned the newly upgraded JALUMI WAR MONUMENT site, beside the Otin River Bridge, Inisa in the State of Osun.

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola was represented by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon (Dr) Adebisi Obawale.

In his address, the governor said,

” State of Osun will strategically reposition the Culture and Tourism sector through her policy and programmes with a view to promoting indigenous cultural festivals, revive monuments and museums with a view to driving the state.”

“These efforts are made so that the sector can attract tourists, generate employment opportunities to our teeming youths, increase the state revenue; discourage rural-urban migration and enjoy other inherent benefits accruable through the sector.”

The Governor added that.

“Presently our state is vigorously pursuing a programme, KARELE OODUA (Yoruba Traditional Immersion Pilgrimage), a concept that creates awareness to the Yorubas in the diaspora of the urgent need to come back home, to their primordial root in Ile-Ife to connect and contribute their quotas to the socio-economy, religion and other aspects of development for the good of our race. What we are commissioning today is additional value to the stock where we can proudly showcase to these people.”

“It gladdens my heart to inform this esteemed gathering that this upgraded JALUMI WAR MONUMENT has been added to the list of the monument sites in the state.”
“Tourists, researchers, excursionists and visitors to our state will now have an addition to places to visit.”

The Olunisa of Inisa, Oba Joseph Oladunjoye Oyedele , Fasikun II took the entire people in attendance to the memory lane of how JALUMI WAR MONUMENT came to being. The crowd listened with rapt attention when Kabiyesi recounted how various wars ravaged Yorubaland between the Fulani and the Yoruba towards 19th century. The cannon was originally erected in 1942 to honor, Captain Robert Bower who stationed at the location during the war. It was a mark of end of war.

The Chairman of the Inisa Descendants Union (IDU), Engr. Aderemi Bello, in his address, gave credence to Captain Bower Canon who became the symbol of war that ended the intra-tribal war between the Yorubas and the Fulanis.

Engr, Bello said the JALUMI WAR MONUMENT was upgraded by the community.

“The funding, design and logistics were provided by the Inisa people under our umbrella association, Inisa Descendants Union.”

He pleaded with the State of Osun government to expedite repairs of roads leading to the monument for easy access to tourists and not to relent to make the site a complete Tourist destination and a potential UNESCO heritage.”

The event was attended by indigenes of Inisa from home and abroad including Chiefs and Obas in the neighbouring towns and villages.
