The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has called for a clear legislative mandate requiring electronic transmission of election results. The party emphasized that Nigerians want this reform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The SDP made the call in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, on Friday in Abuja. The party said Nigeria cannot risk repeating the credibility problems that affected the 2023 polls.

Social Democratic Party (SDP): Why SDP Wants the Law

The SDP explained that stakeholders must act now to strengthen democracy. Electronic transmission of results would:

  • Boost transparency in elections
  • Reduce mistakes linked to manual result handling
  • Prevent manipulation during result collation

The party highlighted that Nigerians clearly expressed their support for reforms during nationwide public hearings on the proposed Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill 2026.

SDP Criticises Senate Resistance

The SDP accused leadership in the 10th Senate of resisting efforts to enshrine real-time electronic transmission in law. It described this resistance as unpatriotic and against the public will. The party warned that the Senate’s stance could undermine confidence in future elections.

INEC Tools, Public Support, and Next Steps

The party pointed to tools like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and INEC’s Result Viewing Portal (IReV) as key to credible polls. It stressed that Nigeria already has the capacity to implement electronic transmission nationwide.

SDP urged citizens and civil society groups to remain engaged, ensuring lawmakers include a legal requirement for real-time electronic result transmission when finalizing the Electoral Act.

Credibility, Transparency, and the 2027 Elections

With calls for transparent elections rising across the country, SDP said lawmakers must act in the national interest. The party warned that Nigeria cannot afford doubts about election outcomes, especially with the 2027 polls approaching.
