THE Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to X Corp., the parent company of the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), to deactivate the verified account of Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and former presidential candidate.

The DSS alleges that Sowore’s tweet criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s claim of eradicating corruption in Nigeria is “misleading information,” “hate speech,” and poses a threat to national security.

The offending tweet monitored by SOJ WORLDWIDE on the official X platform of DSS reads,

This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

The DSS claims the tweet is “extremely dangerous, false, and a privacy violation” that negatively impacts the President and the country.

The DSS cites sections of the Nigerian law, including the Criminal Code Act and the Cyber Crimes Act 2025, which prohibit spreading fake news, publishing misleading content, and hate speech.

The DSS warns that failure to comply with the demand will lead to “far-reaching, sweeping, and across-the-board measures” against X Corp.

Meanwhile, Sowore has vowed not to delete the tweet, despite the DSS’s demand. He described the DSS’s petition as “another act of national disgrace” and accused the agency of attempting to suppress dissent

X Corp. has notified Sowore of the DSS’s request, but has not taken any action on the tweet, citing its policy of transparency and defending users’ voices.
