Suleja Resident Detained For Shouting No Water No Light – The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the detention of a Suleja resident, Hamisu Abdullahi, for shouting “no water, no light” during the visit of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago.

The incident happened in Suleja shortly after Eid-el-Fitr prayers at the Emir of Suleja’s palace. The governor was visiting the palace for a Sallah homage when the resident raised his voice to complain about the lack of basic amenities.

According to reports, Abdullahi protested the poor supply of electricity and water in the area. Security operatives quickly arrested him and took him away from the scene.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the arrest through its spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun.

Abiodun explained that the resident was arrested for allegedly disrupting government activities during the governor’s visit.

He stated that Hamisu Abdullahi, a 38-year-old electrician, was taken into custody and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for investigation.

“One Hamisu Abdullahi of Suleja was arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Minna, for suspected thuggery and attempting to disrupt government activities during the Sallah visit,” the police spokesperson said.

He added that the suspect was later granted bail while investigations continue.

Detained For Five Days

Reports revealed that Abdullahi spent five days in detention before he regained freedom.

He was first held at the Suleja Police Division. After that, officers moved him to the CID in Minna.

The resident later confirmed that he was released on Tuesday evening after meeting bail conditions.

He also claimed that he paid ₦50,000 before his release and was asked to report back to the police headquarters.

Allegation Of Assault By Governor’s Aide

Abdullahi also alleged that one of the governor’s aides slapped him before his arrest.

According to him, the incident happened at the Emir’s palace in the presence of the governor.

“An aide to the governor slapped me and ordered the police to take me away,” he alleged.

However, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Bago, Bologi Ibrahim, said he was not aware of the incident when contacted.

Concerns Over Freedom Of Expression

The incident has sparked public reactions across Nigeria. Many citizens believe the arrest raises serious concerns about freedom of expression.

Observers say Nigerians should be allowed to demand basic amenities without fear of arrest.

In addition, civil society groups have raised concerns over alleged suppression of dissent in Niger State.
