The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, has taken full responsibility for the derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train that happened on Tuesday along the Kaduna corridor shortly after departing Abuja. Speaking on Channels Television’s _The Morning Brief_ on Wednesday, Opeifa assured Nigerians of a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.
“I take full responsibility,” Opeifa stated. “When it comes to safety, there’s no room for indifference. Once something like this happens, the chief executive must own it—and I do.”
No fatalities were recorded. Four passengers had serious injuries, while others were discharged. The NRC is following up with the remaining 618 passengers due to potential post-traumatic effects.

Train services on the Abuja-Kaduna route have been suspended until further notice.
The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is investigating. Opeifa declined to speculate on possible sabotage to avoid undermining the investigation.
The NRC will conduct a safety audit and expects to reopen the route within 30 days after NSIB declares the site open for reconstruction.
Opeifa emphasized that though the incident shouldn’t have happened, NRC will ensure it doesn’t recur. He noted that tracks are safe from vandals and terrorists, monitored by the military along this corridor.

The incident occurred Tuesday around 11 am shortly after the train left Abuja for Kaduna. A passenger described the scene as chaotic. In a similar incident in January 2023, an Abuja-Kaduna train derailed in Kubwa with no casualties.
