THE Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has taken a firm stance against The Punch and Daily Times newspapers, demanding a retraction and apology over a false and defamatory report linking the Commission’s Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, to an alleged coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The report, which claimed Dr. Ogbuku was arrested by military intelligence for allegedly co-sponsoring a failed coup plot and transferring NDDC contract funds to finance it, has been categorically denied by the NDDC.
According to the Commission, the publication represents a gross violation of journalistic ethics, as no attempt was made to contact or verify the story with Dr. Ogbuku or the NDDC before its release.

The NDDC has demanded that both Punch and Daily Times newspapers:
- Immediately retract the defamatory publication from all their news platforms
- Publish a written apology in at least four national newspapers and five consecutive editions of both newspapers, including all associated online and social media platforms.
Failure to comply with these demands within seven days will compel Dr. Ogbuku to institute both civil and criminal proceedings against the publications and their editors, pursuant to the provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 (as amended in 2024) and other applicable laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The NDDC reiterates its commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region, peace and stability of Nigeria, and upholding the highest standards of transparency and accountability in public service.
