CSR: DevComs Network, TCI, Osun Govt Hold Training For Media Advocacy For Family Planning

Non-governmental bodies, The Challenge Initiatives (TCI), DevComs Network and the Family Planning Wing of the Osun State Ministry of Health held intensive training for members of the Press, Social media influencers, and MDA officials to intensify publicity and awareness for Family Planning in the state.

 

The theme of the training is “Media Advocacy for Media Planning.”

The three-day training held at the Ideal Nest Hotel in Osogbo took the participants to the inception of Family Planning, the present and what is to be expected in order to make life worth living for every family.

 

The training supported by the Federal and State governments was anchored by Olumayowa Adeniran of DevComs Network with the support of TCI gave reasons why Family Planning is necessary at this of national economy.

According to Adeniran the purpose and objectives of the training was to strengthen the capacity of journalists on effective reportage of family planning in the state.

 

The training briefed the Media participants about what is required, which includes;

•Enlightening the general populace about the importance of Family Planning services, create awareness to dispel rumours, myths, misconceptions that serves as great barriers to women of reproductive age.

•Usage of various media platforms for intentional messages on FP/AYRH in order to sensitize the public.

 

•The inclusion of youth, traditional, religious and community leaders in Family Planning/Adolescents Youths Reproductive program design and implementation.

•Encourage male involvement in Family Planning services.

 

•Enlighten groups, Mosques, Churches, community on the benefits of Family Planning.

 

•Survival of Women of Reproductive Age (WRA) and their children through increased budgetary allocation and prompt release of funds to prosecute the budget.

Some of the benefits of Family Planning were highlighted,

•Improvement in women and child health.

•Reduction of maternal deaths.

•Improvement in social economic status.

•Increased demand for Family Planning.

•Increase in private health sector contributions in order to increase acceptability of Family Planning.

 

Health Facility Visited

The team visited two health facilities, Atelewo Primary Health Centre and Oke Baale in Osogbo to have one-on-one assessment of the facilities.

 

The Oke Baale team was led by Mrs Roseline Akinlabi while the Atelewo team was led by the Osun State Ministry of Health Coordinator, Mrs Ololade Abatan.

At the two centres, the Journalists engaged few of the Clients  including their husbands who came for Family Planning Counseling and services in interviews.

 

The Family Provider at the Atelewo took the trainees through various family methods which includes, male and female condoms, contraceptive for women, injections in the arms that will lasts for three and five years respectively.

 

According to the Provider, the condom for men serves two important purposes; prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections and prevention of unplanned children.

 

The trainees also witnessed a general Counseling by Coordinating Provider where the women and their children were gathered to sensitize them on the importance of Family Planning. She also had a personal counseling with another client who was ready for family planning.

The service provider said it is advisable for the husband and wife to agree on the type of Family Planning method suitable for them to use out of about six options available.

 

The facilitators include Mr. Olumayowa Adeniran from Devcoms Network, Mrs Olalade Abatan, Mrs Roseline Akinlabi, Olatunde Raimi from TCI and others from the State Government.

 

The training ended with a directive to the Journalists to advocate for Family Planning services by using their various platforms to create awareness into every nook and cranny of the state on the benefits of Family Planning.
