NIGERIA is currently experiencing an intense heat wave, with temperatures soaring across many regions in Nigeria.

 

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has issued a heat stress warning, advising residents to take necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy; see hazard watch here.

 

Here are some essential tips to help you prevent heat stroke and stay cool during this period:

1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid beverages that can dehydrate you, such as alcohol and caffeinated drinks.

2. Wear Light Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothing. This helps your body stay cool and allows sweat to evaporate more easily.

4. Use Sun Protection: Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF. Sunburn can make it harder for your body to cool down.

5. Keep Your Living Space Cool: Use fans, air conditioning, or keep windows open to allow for proper ventilation. If you don’t have access to air conditioning, consider spending time in public places that do, such as shopping malls or libraries.

9. Never Leave Anyone in a Parked Car: The temperature inside a parked car can rise rapidly, posing a severe risk to children, pets, and vulnerable individuals.

10. Take Extra Precautions with Medications: Some medications can affect your body’s ability to stay hydrated and regulate temperature. Consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
