Davido Okpebholo apology — Afrobeats star Davido has firmly rejected calls to apologize to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, insisting that his decision to share the governor’s alleged WAEC result was a deliberate act of public accountability rather than mere trolling. The singer’s remarks arrive just days after a Nigerian lawyer publicly urged him to say sorry, and they signal that the celebrity-versus-governor feud is far from over.

“I am not going to apologize to Monday Okpobolo,” Davido declared. “I posted his WAEC results for the people of Edo state to see who is governing them. The road to your government house is not constructed. We will visit him when it’s time for his reelection.”

Consequently, the singer has doubled down rather than backed away. Meanwhile, the controversy traces back to an All Progressives Congress campaign rally in Osun State, where Okpebholo mocked Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke’s well-known love of dancing. According to reports, Okpebholo told supporters, “Before somebody signs paper, he will dance. Are you not tired?” He then argued that Adeleke had spent four years dancing instead of governing.

Since Adeleke is Davido’s uncle, the singer swiftly stepped in to defend him. Therefore, without adding a caption, Davido shared what he described as Okpebholo’s WAEC result on his Instagram Story. The image showed a mix of grades, and it quickly spread across Nigerian social media, dividing public opinion along political lines.

As a result, legal practitioner and author Timothy Tugbiyele publicly called on Davido to apologize. He argued that a private citizen should never engage a sitting governor so directly, and he insisted that Davido and Okpebholo do not occupy the same social class. “I think what Davido did is disrespectful,” Tugbiyele said, adding that the singer should “exercise some humility and apologise.”

However, Davido’s latest comments make clear that he rejects this framing entirely. Instead of backing down, he has reframed his post as a public service, arguing that Edo residents deserve to know who leads them. Additionally, by referencing the state’s unfinished roads, he has shifted the conversation from academic performance toward governance and infrastructure delivery, which he considers a far more serious issue than a decades-old exam result.

Furthermore, Davido’s promise to “visit” Okpebholo during his reelection bid signals that this dispute could resurface throughout the coming campaign season. Given his large following and his active role in Adeleke’s own reelection push, Davido’s continued commentary is likely to keep Okpebholo’s administration under public scrutiny.

Meanwhile, reactions online remain split. Some commentators argue that Okpebholo started the exchange by traveling into Osun State to mock a sitting governor, and they therefore believe he cannot now claim victimhood. Others maintain that dragging a personal academic record into political discourse lowers the standard of public debate, regardless of who fired first.

Nevertheless, neither Okpebholo nor the Edo State Government has directly responded to Davido’s fresh comments. Because the exchange keeps escalating, observers expect further reactions from both camps in the days ahead.

Ultimately, this saga captures a broader tension in Nigerian politics, where celebrity influence increasingly intersects with governance debates. Davido’s supporters see him as amplifying legitimate concerns about infrastructure in Edo State, while critics view his approach as disrespectful and reductive. Either way, the singer has made his position unmistakably clear: he will not apologize, and he intends to keep the pressure on Okpebholo until voters return to the polls.

For now, the people of Edo State are left watching a very public standoff between a governor and one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars, one that shows no sign of quiet resolution.
