IN a season marked by shifting allegiances, Osun State’s political landscape is witnessing significant upheaval within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). On one front, the Osun PDP Senate caucus has openly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
On another, veteran PDP lawmaker Hon. Oluwole Oke has taken a more definitive step officially defecting to the APC.
While both developments signal fractures within the PDP, their nature and implications diverge significantly.
The Osun PDP Senate caucus’s endorsement of Tinubu appears to be a calculated maneuver, possibly aimed at preserving political influence or securing local advantages in an environment increasingly dominated by the APC.
Though the Senators remain PDP members, their public show of support for a rival party leader marks a serious deviation from party orthodoxy raising questions about internal discipline and the integrity of party structures.
In contrast, Oke’s defection represents a complete political realignment. Unlike the Osun PDP Senate caucus’s symbolic gesture, Oke’s move is institutional. By joining the APC, he aligns fully with its leadership and policy trajectory an action that could reshape local dynamics and potentially influence broader electoral shifts ahead of 2027.
Together, these moves reflect a broader national pattern: the erosion of ideological consistency in favor of political expediency.
For the PDP in Osun, the twin challenges are clear containing internal dissent and maintaining its relevance in a rapidly evolving political terrain.
