On Saturday, April 11, 2020, I published a short write-up with the title, “You Blame Buhari For Everything.” in which I wrote the rate at which people concocted fake news for the consumption of the public on social media.
This write-up attracted lots of traffic showing their mixed feelings. While some people agreed that purveyors of fake news should be sanctioned others said the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) is reaping what it sowed preelection period before the 2015 general election.
From responses, one will get to know which of the divide those speaking for or against came from.

Those who took me to the cleaners came from a section of the country and from a particular political party.
From their reactions, it showed that some people are still nursing bitterness against President Muhammadu Buhari for the defeat they suffered in 2019 Presidential Elections.
Some gave genuine reasons why fake news thrived in Nigeria. They sited situations when our leaders are shrouding information in secrecy from the general public. This gives room for information manipulation or outright fake news.
Some of the fake news are deliberately concocted to destabilise the government of the day in order to pull it down at all costs.
From the reactions of the people, I realized that it would take years to have the desired change we are yearning for if Nigerians continue to attack personalities instead of issues.
The old order will remain in force whether we like it or not because elections can never be won on social media but on the field.

Another angle to the people’s reactions is the insensitivity on the part of our leaders to understand their subjects when important information is hoarded from the public. Lack of transparency on the part of the government gives room for speculations which gives birth to fake news.

How can a sane Nigerian spread a FAKE NEWS that N700 billion got burnt in Accountant General’s office on Monday and some took it as if it was true and spreading it?

They went further that the DG for the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control spent N1b on SMS alone. Haba! Why are we doing this to ourselves?
I think the purveyors of this ungodly news should be arrested and jailed as a deterrent to others like them.
The question we should ask ourselves; is that place the Central Bank of Nigeria, that such magnitude of money is kept?

The Central Bank can never have such money in its Vault not to talk of DG’s office.
Nigerians, we should fear God.”
