Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, the senatorial candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Osun West Senatorial District, has raised serious concerns over the poor health conditions facing grassroots communities. He made this known in a press statement released at Ileogbo, the venue of a two-day free medical programme organised by the Abosede Aina Charity Organization.
In the statement, Dr Ogunbiyi noted that poverty has robbed many rural dwellers of the financial capacity to access quality healthcare. “Poverty rate has contributed immensely to why our grassroots people cannot access good healthcare. Many of them simply cannot afford it,” he said.
Moreover, he explained why medical outreach programmes like this one matter so much in rural Nigeria today. According to him, such initiatives bring essential health services directly to underserved communities that lack permanent medical facilities. “We must take healthcare to the people, especially those in areas where hospitals and clinics remain out of reach,” Dr Ogunbiyi stated.
Furthermore, he described the collaboration with the Abosede Aina Charity Organization as a gesture of goodwill extended to him personally. He explained that the partnership aimed to improve the health conditions of people battling various ailments. “This gesture from the charity organization means a lot to me, and together, we are determined to ease the suffering of our people,” he added.
During the event, a medical team from the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, attended to more than three hundred beneficiaries. The team treated patients with conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and sight defects. In addition, organisers distributed drugs and free glasses to those with eye defects, while they scheduled patients who needed surgery for further medical attention.
As the event progressed, Dr Ogunbiyi moved among the beneficiaries, encouraging them and thanking the medical volunteers for their dedication. He commended the doctors and nurses for giving their time and expertise to serve people who might otherwise never receive proper diagnosis or treatment.
Consequently, Dr Ogunbiyi urged the people to stay conscious of their health at all times. He advised them to prioritise regular checkups and healthy habits in order to live long, productive lives. “Your health remains your wealth. Please, take it seriously and visit health centres whenever you notice any unusual symptoms,” he charged them.
Meanwhile, residents who benefited from the outreach expressed gratitude for the gesture. Many of them said they had lived with untreated conditions for years simply because they could not afford hospital visits. One elderly beneficiary said, “I have suffered from poor eyesight for a long time, and today, I finally received glasses that will help me see clearly again.”
Similarly, another beneficiary praised the collaboration between Dr Ogunbiyi and the charity organisation, describing it as a timely intervention. She noted that many rural communities like hers rarely receive this kind of attention from politicians or public office holders.
Given the scale of the turnout, organisers hinted that they may extend the programme to other communities within the Osun West Senatorial District. They explained that the response from Ileogbo residents showed just how urgently rural communities need consistent access to healthcare services.
In conclusion, Dr Ogunbiyi reaffirmed his commitment to improving healthcare access for grassroots communities if elected into office. He promised to continue partnering with credible organisations to bridge the healthcare gap between urban and rural areas.
