
Ekpoma, Edo State – The Edo State Police Command has provided a detailed update on the recent Ekpoma protest, confirming the deployment of heavy security and the arrest of fifty-two suspects linked to violent criminal activities.
Heavy Security Deployment Across Ekpoma
The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, personally supervised a large-scale security deployment in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, following reports of rising criminal activities.
The operation involved joint efforts by the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Edo State Security Corps (ESSC), and local Hunters. According to the Police, the aim was to restore public order, tackle kidnapping, and prevent further violence.
52 Suspects Arrested After Protest Turned Violent
Police investigations revealed that the Ekpoma protest, which started peacefully, was later hijacked by hoodlums who engaged in criminal acts.
As a result, 52 suspects were arrested for offences including vandalism, looting, rioting, assault occasioning harm, cruelty to animals, and other acts capable of undermining public safety.

Alleged Attack on Enogie’s Palace
The Edo State Police Command further alleged that some of the suspects forcibly entered the palace of the Enogie of Ekpoma, His Royal Highness Anthony Ehizogie Abumere.
During the invasion, the suspects allegedly assaulted the traditional ruler and his wife and destroyed properties within the palace.
Police Dismiss Social Media Misinformation
Contrary to claims circulating on social media, the Police Command stated that no peaceful protester was arrested.
According to the Command, individuals who conducted themselves peacefully were advised to return home, while only those involved in criminal acts were detained and later arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.
Police Reaffirm Commitment to Peaceful Protest
CP Monday Agbonika reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting citizens’ constitutional rights to lawful and peaceful protest.
However, he emphasized that the Police will maintain zero tolerance for violence, criminality, and any actions that threaten public peace or infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens.
Public Advised to Rely on Verified Information
The Edo State Police Command urged members of the public to disregard unfounded reports and rely only on verified information from official sources.
The Command also appreciated the cooperation of residents and assured the public of its unwavering resolve to sustain peace and security across Edo State.
