Rampaging gunmen stormed the Oke-Ode community in Kwara State’s Ifelodun Local Government Area on Sunday, killing 12 people, including 11 forest guards and a community head. The victims were part of a security team positioned to protect the community.
Reports indicate that between 12 to 15 people were killed in the attack, with several others injured and abducted.
Newly recruited forest guards, part of Kwara State’s community security initiative, were among the first targets.
The attack has left residents in fear, with many fleeing their homes amid insecurity.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq expressed deep grief over the tragedy, calling for increased security deployments to the community and state.
The Army Headquarters has directed the General Officer Commanding 2 Division in Ibadan to relocate to Kwara to boost military response.
The Kwara State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, assuring residents that justice will be served.
The police command, in collaboration with the military and National Forest Security Service, has intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators.
Governor AbdulRazaq commended the bravery of forest guards and local hunters who neutralized several attackers despite losing five of their own.
This incident follows a string of kidnappings and attacks in Kwara State, including the abduction of a businessman in Tsaragi and attacks in Patigi and Ifelodun Local Government Areas.
The state government has engaged local stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the crisis and improve security.
