A student of the University of Lagos, Damilola Balogun, has drowned while celebrating his election as the President of the Nigerian University Education Students Association.
Last Thursday, Balogun and his colleagues went to Eleko Beach to celebrate the handover of power from the old administration to the new one.
The formal change of baton had taken place a day earlier with the Dean of the faculty and other top lecturers in attendance.
Balogun was said to be enjoying himself at the beach with his friends when he asked one of them to take a video of him as he did a backflip.
Just about the same time, a massive wave allegedly swept him off his feet and retreated with him.
Frantic efforts to rescue him proved abortive. A search party came out of the water empty-handed.
About 48 hours later, Balogun’s body was seen floating at Eleko beach.
‘This is a huge blow to the whole university community and the prayer is for the Lord to accept his soul’, wrote a certain Mercy Micheal, believed to be a UNILAG student, on Nairaland.
