
Suspected bandits arrested by Nigerian troops during a recent security operation in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have alleged that they obtained AK-47 rifles from officials within the Kwara State Government, according to preliminary interrogation reports.
The suspects were apprehended during a coordinated military operation aimed at flushing out criminal elements terrorising communities in the area. Security sources disclosed that the arrests led to the recovery of arms and ammunition, including AK-47 rifles, believed to have been used in recent attacks.

During questioning, the suspects reportedly claimed that their weapons were supplied through intermediaries linked to government officials in the state. The military authorities stressed that the claims are allegations and are currently undergoing thorough investigation to establish their credibility.
A senior security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the revelations were being treated with utmost seriousness due to the implications for national security. “If proven, this would represent a grave breach of public trust. Investigations are ongoing to verify the claims and identify any individuals involved,” the source said.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Government has not issued an official response to the allegations. Security agencies, however, assured the public that no individual or institution would be shielded if found culpable.
Residents of Ifelodun have continued to call for sustained military presence and transparent investigations, urging authorities to address both armed criminality and any alleged internal support enabling it.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out banditry and related crimes, stating that all suspects remain in custody while investigations continue.
