“The initiative is part of our administration’s broader agenda to strengthen small businesses, reduce poverty, improve food safety and drive sustainable economic growth across Kano State.”
— Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf
Furthermore, Yusuf described butchers as key players in the food supply chain. He therefore urged them to maintain rigorous cleanliness standards in abattoirs and meat processing centers, noting that public health depends heavily on their practices. Consequently, he warned that poor sanitary habits could expose consumers to preventable food-borne illnesses.
“Hygiene is the foundation of safe and quality meat production,” he added, emphasizing that his government would not compromise on this standard.
In addition, the governor linked the butchers’ initiative to a wider push for entrepreneurship across the state. According to him, the administration will continue rolling out policies that empower citizens and strengthen key economic sectors.
“Sustainable development can only be achieved when people are equipped with the tools and opportunities to become self-reliant.”
— Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Kano State Butchers Association, Alhaji Nasiru Isyaku, welcomed the gesture and described it as unprecedented. He explained that the empowerment package would significantly improve butchers’ welfare while also raising professional standards across the industry. As a result, he commended Yusuf for recognizing the sector’s contribution to food security and public health.
Isyaku further pledged that association members would continue upholding hygienic practices and professional conduct in their daily operations.
“This intervention will improve the welfare of butchers and enhance professionalism within the industry.”
— Alhaji Nasiru Isyaku, Chairman, Kano State Butchers Association
Overall, the empowerment program reflects a broader strategy by the Kano State Government to formalize and support informal trades while simultaneously protecting public health. By equipping butchers with proper tools, the administration aims to reduce unsafe practices that often arise from inadequate equipment. Ultimately, officials hope the initiative will strengthen consumer confidence in locally processed meat and support the livelihoods of thousands of families across the state.
