Tragedy on Oshodi–Apapa Expressway: 2 Burnt Alive, 8 Injured in Minibus Explosion

Lagos minibus explosion, Nigeria — A commercial minibus overturned and exploded on the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway on Tuesday evening, killing two people and injuring eight others. As a result, commuters panicked and fled the fiery scene.

The yellow minibus, popularly called a Faka, was heading toward Mile 2, Okota–Isolo around 5 p.m. According to witnesses, a private car reversed suddenly onto the expressway, which forced the minibus driver to brake sharply. Consequently, the vehicle lost control, overturned several times, and burst into flames.

Rescue teams later discovered that the driver had a five-litre petrol container inside the bus. When the container ignited on impact, it caused a massive fire. Unfortunately, the driver and a female passenger seated at the front died instantly.

Quick Response Saves Lives

Fortunately, LASTMA operatives acted swiftly and, with help from a motorist, rescued eight trapped passengers. They immediately rushed the injured to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASAMBUS arrived quickly. They extinguished the fire and secured the area. As a result of the accident, traffic became heavily congested along the expressway.

Authorities Call for Caution

Additionally, a LASTMA spokesperson warned drivers against dangerous behavior, especially reversing on busy roads. He emphasized that the accident was preventable and added that authorities have launched a full investigation.
