BEFORE the advent of modern ‘molue and danfo” buses, there have been some public buses plying across Lagos State owned by the State Government.

 

In 1975, the British Leyland Truck handed over 1,000 bus keys to ease transportation challenges in the State.

 

On 10 July 1975, an important moment in Nigeria’s transportation history took place in London.

Ron Ellis, Managing Director of the British Leyland Truck and Bus Division, formally handed over the keys of the 1,000th bus to the Lagos State Government.

Receiving the vehicle on behalf of the state was Mr. Frank Cuthbert Oladipo Coker (F.C.O. Coker), then Secretary and Head of Service to the Lagos State Government.

This event symbolised the growing partnership between Nigeria and British manufacturers in the mid-1970s, a period when Lagos, bustling commercial hub, was rapidly expanding and in need of a more organised public transport system to serve its growing population.

The presentation of the bus highlights both Nigeria’s infrastructural challenges and its reliance on foreign technical partnerships during the post-independence years.

For Lagos, securing a modern fleet of buses was central to easing urban mobility, long before more localised transport authorities were established.”
