How he was recruited
Ridwan said he travelled to Russia using a tourist visa. According to him, he went there to search for a better life and secure a job.
However, things changed shortly after his arrival.
He explained that he was taken to a military facility and forced to sign documents written in Russian. Because of the language barrier, he did not understand what he was signing.
“They didn’t allow us to use our phones to translate. I didn’t know they would use me for war.”
As a result, he was pushed into military service without proper consent.
Encounter with Ukrainian soldiers
When Ridwan finally got to the battlefield, he made a life-saving decision.
He surrendered to Ukrainian troops immediately he saw them. According to him, the decision saved his life.
He also said the Ukrainian soldiers treated him well after his surrender.
“I was lucky to be captured. They gave me food, clothes and treated me like a human being.”
Emotional appeal to Tinubu
Ridwan has now called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian government to help bring him back home.
In an emotional message, he said he only travelled abroad to support his family. Instead, he found himself trapped in a deadly war.
“I appeal to my government, please forgive your son. I left Nigeria to feed my family.”
Growing concerns for Nigerians abroad
This incident has raised serious concerns about Nigerians travelling abroad in search of opportunities.
In many cases, unsuspecting citizens fall into dangerous situations due to false promises from agents and recruiters.
Therefore, stakeholders are calling on the Federal Government to strengthen travel awareness and protect Nigerians overseas.
Final note
Ridwan’s story is a painful reminder of the risks many young Nigerians face while searching for greener pastures.
As reactions continue, many Nigerians now expect swift action from the Federal Government to ensure his safe return home.
