Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has implemented a new dress code policy aimed at curbing what it describes as “indecent dressing” on campus. The policy, which is now in effect, outlines strict clothing and grooming standards that all students are expected to follow.

Key Details of the New Policy:
Banned Items Include:

Revealing clothing, such as crop tops, mini-skirts, off-shoulder tops, and transparent garments

Sagging trousers, often associated with informal or “street” dressing

Certain hairstyles, including those considered “unconventional” or “distracting” by the university’s standards (e.g., brightly dyed hair, excessive dreadlocks, or unconventional cuts)

Use of excessive accessories or makeup that may be deemed inappropriate in an academic environment

The university management says the goal is to:

Promote discipline and modesty

Create an environment more focused on academics

Preserve the institution’s cultural and moral values

Supporters believe the policy will restore order and decorum, especially in lecture halls and public spaces.

Critics argue it infringes on personal freedom and self-expression, calling it a form of outdated moral policing.

Some students are also concerned about how subjective enforcement might be, depending on what different staff members consider “indecent.”
