Ikire violence Osun — The Osun APC Media Cluster issued an emergency press statement on Monday, August 24, 2026. The party accuses armed thugs of unleashing deadly violence in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area. According to the group, gunmen allegedly aligned with the Accord Party attacked commuters at Naira and Kobo Junction. The attackers reportedly tried to seize control of local transport hubs. Consequently, the party claims the violence killed innocent commuters, including a commercial driver. Police independently confirmed shots fired near the garage. However, the Osun State Police Command says it has not yet verified the number of deaths.
The APC statement adds more allegations. It claims the violence escalated when the Divisional Police Officer for Irewole responded to a distress call. That call involved an abducted party member, the group says. “Officers were assaulted, and service rifles were snatched from police personnel by known criminals,” the group claimed. The statement names a suspect it identified only as Soskid. It also names two others as field commanders: T. Banson and Ayewo. Police have not independently confirmed any of these claims.
Moreover, the group ties the alleged attack to older, unresolved political violence in the area. It recalls the killing of former Irewole Local Government Chairman Remi Abass in February last year. “No one has been brought to justice for that heinous crime,” the statement reads. Notably, the statement goes further still. It alleges that Senator Lere Oyewumi coordinated and sponsored Monday’s violence. The APC claims his past remarks “encouraged aggression against APC members” and emboldened attackers. Oyewumi has not yet responded to these specific accusations. They remain unverified allegations from a rival political camp.
The party also links the unrest to recent political developments. It notes that its governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, met separately with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu just days earlier. Governor Ademola Adeleke held a similar meeting, the group says. During that meeting, the president reportedly directed that Osun State “must remain peaceful, stable, and governed by the rule of law.” The APC credits Oyebamiji with pursuing peaceful engagement. By contrast, it accuses Governor Adeleke of allowing violence to intensify. The governor’s camp has not yet addressed this accusation.
Furthermore, the statement squarely blames Governor Adeleke. As Chief Security Officer of the state, he “has abdicated his constitutional oath,” the party asserts. The group says he allowed alleged thugs and wanted fugitives to operate unchecked. Therefore, the APC Media Cluster calls directly on top security officials. It names Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu and the Zone 11 Assistant Inspector General. It also names the Osun State Commissioner of Police. The group wants these officials to deploy additional security and secure local government secretariats. It also wants police to recover missing weapons and arrest the named suspects and their alleged sponsors.
Despite the gravity of these claims, the party closes on a calmer note. It offers condolences to families affected by Monday’s violence. It urges APC members and residents to stay calm and avoid reprisals. “Street intimidation will never replace the rule of law,” the statement reads. The party also calls on security agencies to work without interference.
As of publication, police confirm gunfire near the Ikire garage. Officials say an investigation into the reported deaths is ongoing.
