Four years ago, my immediate younger brother, Felix Sowore, was murdered in cold blood on his way back from Igbinedion University. His killers remain unidentified to this day.

I still remember the call from my other brother, Akin, on that fateful Saturday morning. He struggled to hide the truth from me that Felix had been murdered, because at the time, the Muhammadu Buhari regime had me restricted to Abuja after an illegal detention and ongoing unlawful treason trial.

What followed was a flurry of calls and commentaries. Some Buhari loyalists rushed to distort the narrative. A social media commentator in Benin, Jack Obinyan, who used to affix Buhari to his name, even tried to dismiss suggestions that dark forces were involved, claiming instead that “serious investigations” were ongoing by police contacts he claimed to know.

We reached out to the Edo State Police Command, where Felix was domiciled, and were told he had been killed by “Fulani herdsmen.” They even sent us pictures of three “Fulani-looking” boys they claimed to have arrested in the “course of investigation.”

That was the last we heard from the police. Even arranging for an autopsy before his burial was a struggle. It was almost impossible until a conscientious comrade, Dr. Gregg OkoOboh, helped us secure the expertise we needed.

The then Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, made a public statement promising to “get to the bottom” of the case. It was nothing but hot air. No investigation, no truth, no justice.

Jide was more than my younger brother. He was a light in our family. As a child, his beauty and infectious happiness earned him the nickname “Daddy.”

He was daring, playful, and always the one willing to take risks when the rest of us hesitated under the watchful eyes of our father. Unlike me, Jide was not content with a life defined only by classrooms and formal schooling.

He chose his own path. First, it was music. Later, he built a business selling medicine in Benin City. At one point, his determination led him back to school. At the age of 48, he gained admission to study Pharmacy at Igbinedion University. His lecturers and classmates testified to his tenacity and seriousness.

It was in his second year at the university that his life was cruelly cut short. On that Saturday morning, he was driving back from class when he was shot near Benin City. The bullet was aimed at his heart. Yet, even in that moment, he kept driving until his body gave out. He died at what the police later claimed was an “unmanned checkpoint.”

My brother’s death shook my family, our community, and countless others across Nigeria and beyond. But no amount of grief has brought us closer to justice. I remain convinced that Felix was assassinated by forces tied to the Buhari regime.

His killing was not random. It was deliberate. One day, I believe, the truth will be revealed, and his killers exposed.

Felix left behind a wife and four beautiful children. His absence has left a void that nothing can fill. He was different—determined to live life on his own terms, unafraid to chart his own course. But those same qualities made him a target for the dark forces that haunt our country.

We miss him dearly. He should still be here with us. And though sorrow cannot bring him back, memory keeps him alive, and one day, justice will too.
