The U.S. Secret Service is hiring police officers, and it is dangling a $50,000 recruitment incentive to attract qualified candidates. Applicants may be eligible for the bonus in accordance with regulatory requirements, so interested persons should read the full eligibility details before they apply.
The Secret Service Police carry out protection assignments, and they guard high-profile sites in the Washington, D.C. area. These include the White House Complex, the Vice President’s Residence, the Main Treasury Building and Annex, and foreign diplomatic missions and embassies. Officers also travel to support missions for the President, the Vice President, and visiting foreign leaders.
Pay is another major draw. Current listings show salaries from about $77,987 to $134,165 per year for the Secret Service Police role, while the Uniformed Division listing shows a range of $75,134 to $129,251. Moreover, some listings state that the position must be performed in Washington, D.C., so relocation is required.
The basic requirements are strict. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and they must hold a valid driver’s license. Furthermore, candidates must be at least 20 years old and under 37 when they receive a conditional job offer. However, exceptions may apply to people with prior service in federal law enforcement positions covered by special retirement provisions.
Health and fitness standards also apply. Candidates must meet specific vision and hearing requirements, and they must carry and use a firearm. In addition, they must pass a drug test before appointment and accept random testing while they serve. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must also confirm their Selective Service registration or exemption.
Training is intensive. New officers complete 12 weeks at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and then they finish 17 weeks of specialized training at the James J. Rowley Training Center. As a result, only committed candidates tend to succeed.
Listings appear for many U.S. locations, and the incentive amount can differ by posting. For example, some postings show $50,000 while others show $40,000. Therefore, applicants should confirm the exact figure, location, and deadline on the official Secret Service careers website before they submit an application.
