Former Super Eagles defender Taribo West has expressed his disappointment and frustration with the treatment of ex-internationals by football authorities in Nigeria.
Speaking at a service of songs for former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, West lamented the lack of support for Rufai’s family after his passing.

West’s with emotional outburst said,
“What kind of nation is this? With the type of example that they have shown with Shofoluwe, Stephen Keshi, Thompson Oliha, Rashidi Yekini, I’ll never advise my son to put his feet for this country,” West said, visibly angry.

He accused football authorities of doing little to support Rufai’s family, despite his contributions to Nigerian football.
West described Rufai as a “football evangelist” and criticized the Lagos Football Association and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for not providing adequate support to his family.

“Do we have a Football Federation or do we have a Football Association in this Lagos State? That this hero, this soldier, this football evangelist, has to be treated this way, and his family,” West said.

West’s emotional reaction to Rufai’s passing was palpable, with tears rolling down his cheeks as he spoke about the legendary goalkeeper.
“When Rufai passed on, I had goose pimples on my body. And every individual I’m speaking to, there were tears rolling down my cheeks. What kind of nation is this?” he said.
Rufai was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and the country’s debut at the FIFA World Cup the same year. His passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from the football community, with many calling for better support for ex-internationals and their families.
