The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has exonerated a final year student, identified as Oladokun Ayomide accused of poisoning his girlfriend through cake.

The school management said he has no intention of causing harm to his girlfriend, identified as Ugbokwe Mmasichukwu and another lady, Odumosu Semilore.

The school management made this clarification following a PUNCH Metro’s report of the students’ arrest by the Ogun State Police Command over an accusation of poisoning his girlfriend and another lady.

The Ogun State Police Command had earlier said it arrested Ayomide for the alleged crime, claiming that he administered a poison believed to be an admixture of brownie cakes, alcohol, and an unknown harmful substance after inviting them at his residence in the Surulere community in the Camp area of the city last Friday.

The police said the female students, who lost consciousness after eating the cake, were rushed to the hospital where they were said to be responding to treatment.

However, according to a statement issued by the Assistant Director, Media Directorate of Public Relations, FUNAAB, Olasunkanmi Olajide, which was made available to our correspondent on Thursday, the cakes purchased by Ayomide “contained a high level of alcohol. This led to the unintentional intoxication of the consumers.

“It is crucial to emphasise that all charges against Ayomide, brought forth by the parents and the school of the affected ladies, have been dropped due to the lack of malicious intent,” the school stated.

When contacted on Thursday, the command, through its Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the student had been released on bail following a settlement by the parents of the two students.

“He (Ayomide) is entitled to a bail. The girl has recovered and she has also been discharged from the hospital. The parents have settled,” she disclosed via a WhatsApp message.
