Abuja/Washington, February 11, 2026 – The United States is sending 200 troops to Nigeria to train the military in fighting insurgents and violent extremist groups. Additionally, the deployment aims to strengthen coordination between Nigerian forces and U.S. advisers.
Advisors, Not Fighters
Major General Samaila Uba, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, confirmed that the U.S. troops will not engage in combat. Instead, they will advise and guide Nigerian forces to plan and execute operations effectively.
A small U.S. team already works in Nigeria, assisting with intelligence and operational planning. As a result, analysts say the expanded deployment shows a strengthening security partnership between the two countries.

Nigeria Faces Growing Security Challenges
Insurgents continue to attack communities in the northeast. Meanwhile, armed bandits, kidnappers, and communal clashes disrupt life in the central and northwest regions.
With this support, the Nigerian military can respond faster and more efficiently. Experts believe that better-trained forces will protect civilians and restore stability in affected areas.
Political and Regional Significance
The deployment signals a closer U.S.–Nigeria security relationship. Furthermore, recent diplomatic discussions highlighted the need for joint action against violent groups.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, plays a critical role in regional security. Consequently, the U.S. troops will help Nigeria tackle insurgency, strengthen joint operations, and enhance West Africa’s stability.
