J.D. Power released its 2026 U.S. Home Insurance Study on 15 September. It surveyed 17,191 homeowners and renters between July 2025 and July 2026. Satisfaction scores fell across the industry, and rising premiums are a key reason. In addition, an analysis of the study by Rates Chaser found that 45 per cent of policyholders do not fully understand their coverage.

For claims, J.D. Power’s 2026 Property Claims Satisfaction Study ranked Amica first with 773. The Hartford was second on 756, and Chubb third on 744. The industry average was 702. Therefore, these three insurers stand out when a customer actually has to file a claim.
NerdWallet’s 2026 ratings weigh financial strength, consumer experience and coverage. Chubb earned its top score of 5.0. NJM followed with 4.9. Andover Companies and USAA each scored 4.8, and Amica scored 4.7. State Farm earned 4.6 stars and the title of best big national insurer. However, NerdWallet notes that it ranked below average for claims satisfaction in J.D. Power’s study.
Availability also matters. USAA serves only military members, veterans and their families. Chubb suits owners of high-value homes. Amica does not sell in Hawaii. Regional insurers such as NJM and Erie sell only in limited states. For that reason, a top national ranking may not help if the company does not operate where you live.
Before you buy, get quotes from at least three insurers. Check each company’s AM Best financial strength rating and its complaint record with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. In addition, ask what the policy excludes. Standard policies generally do not cover flood or earthquake damage, and prices vary widely by state.
Nigerians who buy property in the United States should also note that mortgage lenders usually require homeowners insurance before closing. As a result, it pays to compare policies early.
Rankings change each year, and prices depend on your location and home. This article is for information only and is not financial or insurance advice.
