Bisi Alimi HIV 22 years LAGOS, NIGERIA — Prominent Nigerian gay rights activist, Bisi Alimi, has marked 22 years since he was diagnosed with HIV, using the milestone to educate Nigerians and confront widespread misconceptions about the virus.
In a video shared on social media, Alimi reflected on his journey while emphasizing that HIV is no longer a death sentence. He stressed that accurate information, access to treatment, and compassion remain critical in tackling stigma across the country.
“I have lived with HIV for 22 years,” Alimi said. “And I am still here, healthy, thriving, and living my life fully. HIV is not what many people in Nigeria still think it is.”
He explained that despite medical advancements, many Nigerians continue to hold outdated beliefs about the virus. Consequently, those living with HIV often face discrimination, fear, and social exclusion.
“The biggest problem we have today is ignorance,” he added. “People still believe HIV can be transmitted through casual contact, which is completely false.”
Furthermore, Alimi highlighted that modern antiretroviral therapy allows people living with HIV to lead long and productive lives. He also noted that individuals on consistent treatment can reach an undetectable viral load, meaning they cannot transmit the virus to others.
“Science has moved forward, but sadly, our mindset has not caught up,” he said. “We must educate ourselves and stop the stigma.”
In addition, he urged Nigerians to embrace testing and regular health checks. According to him, early detection significantly improves outcomes and helps prevent further spread.
“Knowing your status is not something to fear,” Alimi stated. “It is the first step to taking control of your health.”
Meanwhile, health experts continue to echo similar sentiments, stressing that awareness campaigns and open conversations are essential in reducing HIV-related stigma in Nigeria.
Alimi’s message has since sparked conversations online, with many praising his courage and openness. Others also called for increased public education and government support to combat misinformation surrounding HIV.
