A court in Abuja has told the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) that it must allow female corps members to wear skirts if they want to, not just trousers.
The court said NYSC’s rule of only allowing trousers goes against the Nigerian Constitution because it affects the right to practice religion and personal dignity.
The case was decided on June 13, 2025, by Justice Hauwa Yilwa. She said that making trousers the only option for female corps members is not right, especially when it goes against their religious beliefs.
Two former corps members, Ogunjobi Blessing and Ayuba Vivian, took the NYSC to court.

They said wearing trousers was against their Christian faith. They referred to a Bible verse, Deuteronomy 22:5, which they believe says women should not wear clothes meant for men. They said the NYSC rule was forcing them to go against their beliefs.
The women asked the court to say that NYSC’s refusal to allow skirts was a violation of their rights. They also said NYSC officials embarrassed and harassed them, which they believed was unfair treatment.
They asked the court to order NYSC to allow skirts for any woman who objects to trousers for religious reasons. They also asked for 10 million naira each as compensation.

The court agreed with them. Justice Yilwa said the NYSC’s actions were wrong and violated their rights. She ordered NYSC to allow skirts for women who object to trousers for religious reasons.
She also told NYSC to bring back the two women and give them their NYSC certificates, which they had not received because of the uniform issue.
Instead of the 10 million naira they asked for, the court gave each woman 500,000 naira as compensation. The judge said what happened to them was discrimination based on religion and that they were treated in a degrading way.
