Lawyer and public commentator Deji Adeyanju has fired back at Peter Obi following the politician’s claim that his vehicle’s tyres were unjustly clamped at the airport. Obi had linked the incident to a targeted campaign against him by the Federal Government. However, Adeyanju flatly rejects that narrative, and he has taken to X to say so.
“Just An Ordinary Fine,” Adeyanju Insists
In a series of posts, Adeyanju dismissed Obi’s account. Instead, he insisted that the episode amounted to nothing more than a routine airport parking fine, one that countless Nigerians encounter and settle without any drama. According to him, the fine is an “ordinary” one that he has paid himself “whenever” his car has been clamped.
Consequently, Adeyanju could not understand why a presidential aspirant would personally intervene over such a minor matter. He therefore branded Obi “a very anyhow person” for allegedly calling airport officials to avoid payment.

How the Process Works, According to Adeyanju
Furthermore, Adeyanju explained that airport fines are imposed on the spot, and a receipt is issued immediately. Officials only release a clamped vehicle once the fine is paid, he noted. Similarly, he pointed out that this exact situation has happened to him multiple times at both the Abuja and Lagos airports, adding that the Lagos fine tends to cost more than the one in Abuja.
In addition, Adeyanju revealed that his own driver and his wife’s driver have paid similar fines on several occasions. Notably, they simply inform him afterward and present the receipts, rather than escalating the matter to him directly.
Adeyanju Rejects the “Targeting” Claim
Moreover, Adeyanju challenged the idea that a wrongly parked vehicle being clamped could equate to political persecution. He asked pointedly how a driver’s parking violation could be framed as evidence that the ruling party is targeting Obi. Even where influence must be exercised, he argued, it should never be wasted on something as trivial as a N25,000 parking fine.
As a result, Adeyanju concluded that Obi was “stingy” for allegedly resisting a fee that ordinary Nigerians pay routinely. He ultimately described the presidential aspirant as “shameless” for turning the incident into a political talking point.
Background to the Controversy
The disagreement stems from an incident on July 4, 2026, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo later released a statement, backed by CCTV footage, alleging that Obi’s vehicle was left unattended in a restricted drop-off zone before airport security clamped its tyres. Keyamo further alleged that the vehicle was released after Obi personally spoke with an airport manager, and without payment of the required fine. He has since given Obi seven days to apologize to airport workers and pay the fine, or risk further action from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Obi, meanwhile, maintains that the clamping was unjust and reflects a broader persecution agenda against him. Nevertheless, both Keyamo and Adeyanju continue to push back publicly against that characterization, and the dispute shows no sign of cooling down.
This is a developing story.
