FG declares public holiday Eid ul-Mawlid, SOJWORLDNEWS.

FG declares public holiday Eid ul-Mawlid —The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday. The declaration marks this year’s Eid ul-Mawlid, the annual commemoration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Consequently, workers and members of the public across Nigeria will observe the day as a nationwide holiday.

The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Friday, August 21, on behalf of the Federal Government. A statement e-signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, formalised the announcement. Through the statement, Tunji-Ojo extended warm felicitations to Muslims both within Nigeria and across the diaspora.

Furthermore, the minister used the occasion to encourage reflection among all Nigerians, not just the Muslim community. He noted that Eid ul-Mawlid offers a moment to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion and humility. As he put it,

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.”

In addition, Tunji-Ojo stressed that these values remain especially important given the country’s current challenges. He therefore urged Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation, to embrace compassion, tolerance, and service to humanity. Moreover, he called on citizens to use the holiday to pray for peace, unity, and stronger national cohesion, noting that maintaining that unity remains a shared responsibility.

This latest declaration follows a familiar pattern from the Federal Government, which regularly announces public holidays to mark major religious celebrations. Earlier this year, for instance, the government declared holidays for Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Eid-el-Kabir, which commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. Nigeria similarly observes public holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr, Christmas, and Easter throughout the year.

Meanwhile, the announcement comes at a time when many Nigerians are already looking forward to a short midweek break. Since August 25 falls on a Tuesday, workers in both public and private sectors can expect a brief pause from their regular schedules. As a result, many families are likely to use the extended weekend-adjacent break for travel, religious observance, and time with loved ones.

Ultimately, the Federal Government’s declaration reinforces its continued recognition of Nigeria’s religious diversity. By formally setting aside the day, the government allows Muslim faithful nationwide to mark the occasion through prayers, reflection, and other religious activities without disruption from work commitments. At the same time, the broader message from the ministry encourages all Nigerians, regardless of faith, to embrace the values associated with the celebration.

Sojworldnews will continue monitoring further updates from the Ministry of Interior regarding this year’s Eid ul-Mawlid observances nationwide.
