The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2025 in Dakatsalle town, about 50 kilometres from Kano, as the team was approaching the final stretch of their journey home.
Those who lost their lives in the crash include athletes, a journalist, medical personnel, and sports administrators, according to preliminary reports from emergency responders and eyewitnesses.
Details of the cause of the accident remain sketchy at the time of filing this report, but authorities said emergency response teams were deployed to the scene, and the injured taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The Chairman, Kano chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Zahraddeen Saleh confirmed the incident.
He said those that died include the Public Relations Officer of Kano Sports Commission and a photojournalist attached to Express Radio, an online medium.

The Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, who confirmed the incident, said many other athletes sustained various degree of injuries following the fatal accident on Saturday.
He explained that the bus conveying 30 athletes fell from the bridge, leading to the death of the 20 athletes.
