Nigerian troops arrested suspected bandits in Kwara State after a recent security operation in Ifelodun Local Government Area. During interrogation, the suspects claimed that government officials supplied them with AK-47 rifles.
Troops carried out the coordinated operation to flush out criminal groups terrorising nearby communities. The soldiers recovered several weapons and ammunition, including AK-47 rifles allegedly used in recent attacks.
During questioning, the suspects said intermediaries linked to officials within the Kwara State Government delivered the rifles to them. Military authorities clarified that investigators are still examining these claims and have not confirmed them.
A senior security source, who spoke anonymously, said security agencies are treating the allegations with utmost seriousness because of their implications for national security. The source added that investigators are working to verify the claims and identify anyone involved if evidence supports them.
As of the time of this report, the Kwara State Government has not released an official response. However, security agencies assured the public that they will not protect any individual or institution found culpable.
Residents of Ifelodun Local Government continue to demand a sustained military presence and transparent investigations. They urged authorities to confront both armed criminality and any internal support that may enable it.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to ending banditry and related crimes. It confirmed that all suspects remain in custody while investigations continue.
