Former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has passed away at 69. He died on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja. As of press time, no official statement has been released by his family or the Nigeria Police Force regarding the cause of death.

 

Arase served as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police from April 2015 to June 2016.

During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the police force, particularly in intelligence gathering and investigation. Some of his notable roles include;

Head of Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau

He led the police force’s top intelligence unit, playing a crucial role in several high-profile operations.

Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State: Arase held various key positions throughout his career, showcasing his expertise in policing.

His leadership in intelligence gathering was instrumental in shaping policing strategies.

United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Namibia:

Arase’s international exposure broadened his perspective on policing and security.

After retirement, Arase continued to serve the nation as Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) from January 2023 until his removal in June 2024 by President Bola Tinubu. During his tenure, he oversaw recruitment processes and disciplinary actions within the Nigeria Police Force.

 

Reacting to his passing, a senior police officer described Arase as “a fine officer who gave his best to the Nigeria Police Force.” His contributions, especially in intelligence, will be remembered. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family soon.
