Peter Randy says President Bola Tinubu cannot win any free and fair election in 2027, citing Nigeria’s growing debt. Randy made the claim in an interview in which he listed loans he says Tinubu has taken since 2023. He also asked where the savings from petrol subsidy removal have gone. Sojworldnews could not confirm his title or party.
According to Randy, Nigerians are tired, whatever part of the country a president comes from. He said the average Nigerian wants a better country. He argued that citizens should be demanding that Tinubu explain what he has done with the nation’s commonwealth. He then listed loans for women’s empowerment, social safety nets, girls’ education, economic stabilisation, power, health and nutrition.
Randy said borrowing is not the problem. In his view, the question is what the money is for. He cited the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2007, which sets rules on how government may borrow and spend. He also claimed that debt service now takes over 60 per cent of revenue.
His claims against the record
| Claim | What reports show |
|---|---|
| Tinubu is seeking fresh loans | Confirmed. He asked the Senate on 27 October for $20.52 billion and €1.045 billion |
| $750 million power sector loan, June 2023 | Also cited in a Makinde-Daura campaign statement; not independently verified |
| $750 million stabilisation loan, June 2024 | The same campaign statement puts that programme at $2.25 billion |
| Health, education and nutrition loans | Reports cite $1.57 billion in 2025, plus $500 million from the African Development Bank |
| Ways and Means securitisation | Guardian reports ₦23.7 trillion was converted into long-term bonds |
| Debt service above 60 per cent of revenue | Not verified |
Several figures in the interview were unclear, so Sojworldnews checked only those that could be matched to published reports.
The government has defended the borrowing. Taiwo Oyedele, who chairs the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, said after the Federal Executive Council meeting that the funds are meant for productive ventures. Tinubu has also said that a nation cannot borrow its way to greatness. In addition, he has said he has no regrets over removing the petrol subsidy.
Other critics have raised similar questions. Atiku Abubakar and the ADC rejected the new loan request. They asked Tinubu to publish a full account of borrowing since 29 May 2023 and of how subsidy savings were used. Senator Victor Umeh also asked where earlier loans went, since contractors are still unpaid.
The presidential election is scheduled for 16 January 2027. This article presents Randy’s remarks and does not establish any claim as fact. Sojworldnews will update it if the government replies directly.
