However, the police said the narrative attached to the video did not reflect what actually happened.
In a statement issued on June 24, 2026, Force Headquarters in Abuja identified the armed men in the video as members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters.
According to the police, the volunteers actively support security operations in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State.
The statement, signed by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, explained that the video captured a routine encounter between a police officer and community security volunteers.
Furthermore, the volunteers travelled to a designated operational area to support ongoing efforts against crime.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the individuals featured in the video are not bandits. They are duly recognized members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters who are actively supporting ongoing security operations in collaboration with security agencies in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State,” the statement said.
The police stressed that the claims attached to the footage distorted the facts. Consequently, the Force urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it online.
The clarification comes as security agencies continue operations against banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across northern Nigeria.
Katsina remains one of the states most affected by bandit attacks. As a result, security agencies often collaborate with local vigilante groups and registered hunters.

Therefore, the police urged citizens to disregard the claims attached to the viral footage and rely on verified updates.
“Members of the public are urged to disregard the misleading claims attached to the video and rely only on information disseminated through official channels of the Nigeria Police Force and other authorized government sources,” the statement said.
The Force also warned individuals and groups involved in spreading false information.
Moreover, police authorities said they could take legal action against anyone who deliberately circulates content capable of threatening public peace and security.
