The lawmakers have now formally rescinded their decision and declared renewed support for the
impeachment process, a development that significantly alters the political dynamics within the
Assembly and revives a process that appeared to be losing momentum.
Their initial withdrawal was widely interpreted as a major setback to the impeachment effort.
However, sources close to the Assembly disclosed that the lawmakers made a U-turn after what
they described as extensive consultations with party leaders, political stakeholders, and their
constituents.
In a brief joint statement, the lawmakers explained that their earlier decision was taken in the
interest of peace and stability in the state. They added that recent political developments
compelled them to reconsider their position.
“After deep reflection and consultations with relevant stakeholders, we have resolved to rejoin
our colleagues in the impeachment process in line with our constitutional duties and commitment
to accountability,” the statement read.
The renewed support is expected to strengthen the pro-impeachment bloc within the Assembly,
potentially accelerating legislative steps required under the 1999 Constitution.
Lawmakers backing the process insist the move is guided by alleged breaches of legislative-executive
relations and governance concerns.
Meanwhile, supporters of Governor Fubara have condemned the reversal, describing it as politically
motivated and part of a wider power struggle that has continued to disrupt governance in the state.
As of the time of filing this report, the governor’s office has yet to issue an official response.
Political analysts warn that the renewed impeachment push could further heighten instability in
Rivers State if not carefully managed. Calls are growing for national leaders, party elders, and
relevant constitutional bodies to intervene and ensure that due process and dialogue prevail.
As the situation continues to unfold, attention remains firmly on the Rivers State House of
Assembly, where the coming days are expected to be decisive for the political future of Governor
Fubara and his administration.
