ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has reportedly issued an arrest warrant against former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, over allegations linked to unaccounted funds totaling approximately N210 trillion flagged in audit reports covering 2017 to 2023.

The development emerged during a committee session reviewing findings contained in reports submitted by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation. Lawmakers expressed concern over what they described as unresolved financial discrepancies involving the nation’s oil company.

According to the committee, several invitations were sent to key officials connected to the audit queries. However, the lawmakers claimed that some of those invited failed to appear before the panel to provide explanations.

Committee Demands Accountability

During the proceedings, members of the committee stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.

“The committee is determined to get to the root of these audit observations and ensure that every kobo belonging to Nigerians is properly accounted for,” a lawmaker reportedly stated during the session.

Furthermore, the committee insisted that public officials and former office holders have a responsibility to respond to legitimate inquiries from the National Assembly.

“Nobody is above accountability. Those who managed public funds must explain any discrepancies identified in official audit reports,” another committee member reportedly said.

Audit Queries Under Scrutiny

The audit reports under review allegedly highlighted financial transactions and records requiring clarification between 2017 and 2023. Consequently, the Senate Committee intensified its investigation into the matter.

Although the figure of N210 trillion has generated widespread public attention, the committee noted that its ongoing investigation aims to determine the exact nature of the audit observations and whether any financial regulations were breached.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have called for due process, urging the committee to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation while allowing all affected parties the opportunity to present their side of the story.

Public Interest in NNPCL Operations

The controversy has once again placed NNPCL’s financial management under public scrutiny. Over the years, civil society groups, industry analysts, and lawmakers have repeatedly demanded greater transparency in the oil and gas sector.

As a result, many Nigerians are closely monitoring the Senate’s investigation and awaiting further disclosures from both the committee and former officials connected to the audit findings.

Neither Mele Kyari nor NNPCL had issued an official response to the claims contained in the committee proceedings at the time of filing this report.
