Kalu SEDC ₦16.6bn expenditure ABUJA, Nigeria — Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on the South East Development Commission (SEDC) to explain the expenditure of ₦16.6 billion and allegations that the commission paid ₦153 million as rent for a one-room office within one week.
During a legislative session, Kalu questioned the commission’s spending pattern and demanded full disclosure of how the funds were utilized. As a result, the issue has attracted widespread public attention and intensified calls for accountability.
According to reports, lawmakers raised concerns about the speed at which the commission reportedly spent the funds. In addition, they sought clarification over claims that SEDC paid ₦153 million for a one-room office, a figure many observers consider unusually high.
“We need a clear explanation of how ₦16.6 billion was spent and why such a huge amount was reportedly paid for a one-room office rent,” Kalu stated during the proceedings.
Furthermore, the Deputy Speaker emphasized the need for transparency in the management of public funds. He noted that development commissions were created to accelerate regional growth and improve infrastructure, not to become subjects of financial controversies.
Consequently, lawmakers directed SEDC officials to provide detailed records and supporting documents for the expenditures. They also stressed that every kobo of public money must be accounted for in line with due process.
Meanwhile, the allegations have sparked reactions from stakeholders across the South-East. Many residents, civil society groups, and policy analysts have called for a comprehensive review of the commission’s financial records.
Moreover, governance experts argue that transparency remains essential for maintaining public confidence in government institutions. Therefore, they believe SEDC should promptly address the concerns raised by lawmakers and provide verifiable evidence to support its spending decisions.
As scrutiny continues, attention will remain focused on the commission’s response and any documentation it presents regarding the questioned expenditures.
