OSUN State Family Planning Stakeholders in Osun had its quarterly roundtable meeting at the DC Hotels, Osogbo on Thursday, April 3, 2025.

 

The Stakeholders comprising the media, TCI Representatives and officials of the Osun State Ministry of Health for the review of “Challenges, Successes and Impacts of TCI Intervention on Family Planning in Osun.”

 

The first Speaker, Osun State Family Planning Coordinator, Mrs Ololade Margaret Abatan speak on “Progress Report of Activities Supported by TCI.”

 

She itemized the goals as:

  • Every pregnancy is wanted.
  • To reduce incidence of unplanned pregnancies and
  • To reduce maternal mobility and mortality rate.

She rated the TCI high, that, within its three years in Osun, it has succeeded in training Service Providers, helped in supportive training on “On The Job Training” (OJT), supply of consumables and inreach and outreach services.

 

According to Mrs Abatan, key achievements of TCI within the space of three years include;

  • 40 Family Planning service providers trained on Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC)
  • Supportive supervision to ensure competency and proficiency of service providers.
  • On the job coaching of LGA M& E Officers to ensure quality data for decision making
  •  Quarterly review meeting of the LGA Health Promotion Officers, Reproductive Health Coordinators and facility mobilizers

She recommend procurement of FP consumables and commodities, procurement on the BHCPF (25k) and increase awareness creation on religious leaders, media and facility mobilizers to dispel rumours, myths and misconceptions on FP.

 

Mrs Adebayo Funmilayo representing Mrs Adeniji Taiwo, the State Health Promotion Offices speak on “Impact of TCI on Family Planning in Rural Areas in Osun State.”

She said despite the importance of FP in improving health and quality of lives in rural areas, it is facing one form of challenges or the other, including;

  • Cultural and religious beliefs.
  • Lack of awareness and education.
  • Limited access to facilities due to shortages of health facilities.
  • Poverty and economic restraints.
  • Inadequate polity implementation and gender inequality.

 

In spite of the challenges encountered, TCI has achieved numerous successes including;

  • Community engagement and awareness campaigns through grassroot campaigns, outreach programs and community programs.
  • Capacity building for Health Workers through trainings equiping them with necessary skills.
  • Strengthening Health System.

 

However, she recommended that TCI needed to sustain and build on the successes achieved so far with continuous advocacy and education.

 

She added that policy support and implementation is inevitable with continuous monitoring and evaluation.

 

Adolescent Desk Officer in Osun States Ministry of Health, Mrs Akinlabi Roseline dwelt on the review of “Challenges of Adolescent Pregnancy and Impacts of TCI Intervention Programmes on FP in Osun State.”

 

She itemized risks and causes as

  • Poverty and limited Opportunities
  • Child marriage.
  • Insufficient access to accurate and comprehensive information about sexual and reproductive health.
  • Cultural Norms and Taboos
  • Social Pressure: Peer pressure, media influence, and family expectations can contribute to early sexual activity and pregnancy.
  • Sexual Abuse and Violence: including rape, are significant risk factors for adolescent pregnancy.
  • Lack of Access to Contraception.

 

According to Mrs Akinlabi, TCI intervention has improved health qualities of adolescents in the area of training of workers, technical and funding support, creation of awareness, distribution of educative health leaflets on adolescent sexual reproduction and Conduct of inreaches and outreaches to improve access to contraceptives at no cost.

 

In all, TCI has raised the bar of Family Planning from 29% to 35% within the space of three years of its existence in Osun State.
